The proprioceptive system is the feeling in our joints, muscles, and connective tissues that regulates the body’s awareness of which parts of our bodies are moving and where our body is in space. The proprioceptive sense is responsible for sensory input and often emotional regulation. Children seek proprioceptive input for safety, reassurance, and to manage their behavioral and emotional reactions to sensory stimulus. When their sensory regulation system is off it is unsettling and may cause anxiety, behaviors/meltdowns, and/or emotional distress.
